Petition for the Breton flag emoji
May Brittany finally have its emoji!
By signing this petition, I support the idea of an emoji using the Breton flag (Gwenn ha Du).
As Bretons or friends of Brittany, we are asking Google, Apple, Facebook, Samsung, Microsoft, IBM and Twitter to support the proposal for the Breton flag emoji to the Unicode consortium.
- Brittany must be able to assert its presence online. Brittany has always championed its strong regional identity. Brittany regional pride is, by far, the strongest in France (Study NewCorp Conseil 2014).
- The Gwenn ha Du appears on each Breton vehicle registration plate. It flies proudly over the entrance of public and corporate buildings. A large variety of Breton packagings continuously display the Breton flag. Finally, the Breton Flag is now famous for being seen at almost every major cultural event or sport in the world.
- Many other territories already have their emoji, including 12 French territories, e.g., Guadeloupe 🇬🇵, Saint Pierre and Miquelon 🇵🇲, the French Southern Territories 🇹🇫. Our British neighbors (Wales 🏴, Scotland 🏴, and England 🏴) got theirs in 2016.
- The codepoints for the Breton flag already exist. Just adopt it. Platforms like Google, Facebook, Apple, Samsung or Twitter may already encode the Breton flag. While they usually wait for the recommendation of Unicode, exceptions happen regularly (the flag of Texas is for example available on Whatsapp).
